Faren and the French Fries! New Video

Hello, Hello, I know you’re there.. Well, I just need to talk....... OMG this video is so cute and the song Answering Machine by the pop duo Faren and the French Fries is sooooo catchy!

The Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA) art colony class have created a POPTASTIC video production (as described on CMA’s blog). Watch for the awesome credits with the featured kids and listing of the production team of teaching artists along with Faren and the French Fries song “Hey You”.

CMA's new headquarters will be a 10,000-square-foot former loading dock in Hudson Square at 103 Charlton St. The grand opening is set for Oct. 1.

Oh to be a kid again. I wish!!

Ava Luna @ the Clocktower Gallery

Ava Luna played a show @ the Clocktower Gallery as part of Above the Law Series curated by Joe Ahearn. One flight up from the 13^th floor and adjacent to the roof the audience squeezed in close for an intimate experience.

This is a great band and the acoustics in the space only enhanced their sound. We were all lucky enough to hear almost a complete album of gems performed for the first time, creating an immediacy and edge.

Dynamic Acoustics, crazy awesome harmonies, soul strutting and hard-hitting music structure were made for a listener who enjoys being challenged. Ava Luna combines so many music genres that create a jumbled juxtaposition of dynamic excitement.

Style counts today even in the world of poetry. The latest reprint of Kenneth Sonny Donato’s “A Poet's Guide To The Bars” has hit the shelves, bringing poetry up front and out of the dusted stacks of treasured finds in the backroom.

Pax Americana Productions, LLC has curated Sonny’s poetry into a visually graphic format where text, imagery, editing and layout meet to house his retrospective of legendary LA bars in which dreams are one shot away. For online promotion they have created a must see book trailer. (below)

Geo Wyeth's, One Man Exceptional Band @ Joe's Pub

Geo Wyeth’s masterful skill and intentional hesitation created an edge of uncertainty and unpredictability at his solo show at Joe’s Pub last night.

Although the set was clearly planned it felt like a conceptual foray into musical chance operation.

Geo opened with the set creating a disorderly clutter of drum beats with a strapped together Tom Tom. He paced through the crowd leading his own parade to join guest saxophone player on stage. Throughout the set he played the baby grand with unbridled force and exuberance. Geo sung with conviction but created a vocal stutter step suspending his vocals in mid air. While playing a hand held Casio he sang phrases gathered from field studies of New York conversations. When he picked up the acoustic guitar I didn’t expect it to be beat with a drum stick.

Whether he played the electric guitar, keyboard, baby grand or drums, each instrument provided and opportunity for self expression and undeniable experimentation.

The Shivers; Affectively Charged Set @ Rockwood Music Hall

There were many hindrances. The 18' by 18' room, the mini stage that just fit the grand piano, leaving the drums on the floor; the folks "just trying to get through," the peep-show reminiscent red light above their heads, the nine dollar rail whiskey. Through all these obstacles, including the strict 45 minute set restrictions implemented by the Rockwood Music Hall, The Shivers valiantly and deftly jumped through the hoops.

The duo opened with a guitar and piano only version of "Love is in the Air," a track off frontman/songwriter/master-dancer Keith Zarriello's debut solo album, Truants From Life. With Jo's piano taking the melody, Zarriello slowly and methodically sang the first verse, but at the songs climax "love doesn't care, if you prance around in your underwear, in your underwear, you're in your underwear," his face was riddled with emotion, excitement and a undisclosed manic glee that stayed hidden on his face throughout the show. Including one song on her own, Jo's thunderous piano exists as the structure of each song played, teaming in perfect harmony with Keith's sharp yet minimal guitar picks, and the occasional marching band drumbeat.

I can't tell you the rest of the set list, I can't tell you how many songs they played, all I had written on my hand at the end of the show was "LIITA," detailing the opener. It wasn't that I necessarily forgot to write as the show went along, it was that I couldn't bring myself to do anything but stare. Enthralling, rapturous, magnetic, these words don't make the cut in my memory. I remember his face, I remember her face, I remember their cues to each other, I remember hearing the bartender telling people to "wait a minute," because she couldn't stop watching either.

There are so many musical references you can tally up when describing The Shivers' sound (The Velvet Underground being the biggie), but they transfer so well between all their influences that it creates something only them, making a list pointless. If I must create a profile for your imagination, think the intensity of Mick Jagger, the emotional outbursts of Mark Hollis, and all wrapped up in a similarly-sporadic David Byrne. It's just so damn entertaining; and these are not happy songs! This is (apparently) not a happy man, and he's letting you know this, which becomes extremely admirable as you witness his disappointment manifest on stage.

And while contained in each song may lie a story of unrequited love, depression or hatred, the path one travels through a Shivers live show is not one of heartbreak, but one where you take desperate stabs at trying to attain that eternal glee disguised on the face of the performer; and at least this audience member was ecstatic to be allowed that attempt.

The Shivers are: Keith Zarriello and Jo Schornikow; they are taking a hiatus from New York City, Zarriello stating, "I forgot there were places with…trees. I gotta get out of the city for a while.”

Ava Luna @ Piano’s; Trichotomy of Styles

The twisted soul, punk attitude and divine harmonies of the band Ava Luna were welcome sounds @ Piano’s.

The seven member band presented a very lively set full of soul / funk and a bass line groove that made dancing my only option.

Carlos Hernandez the lead singer and ultimate contortionist aptly put his falsetto into hard drive. His enthusiastic rendering of soul-ridden vocals brought to mind Sam Cooke. The female trio’s sophisticated Doo-wop harmonies worked as passages along side the synth, bass and drums that had a scratchy almost garage band feel. Ava Luna effectively created a trichotomy of styles into a soul melding mash.

Having only seen a few videos and hearing some tracks seeing the band live left me with a strong impression. I loved their energy, spirit and intention.

This was the conclusion of Patrick Duffy’s relaunch party for the music blog Pop Tart Sucks Toasted that was taken down by Google’s Blogger in February earlier this year. Duffy’s taste and hard work has helped enumerable musicians gain much deserved exposure. Sorry I only came out to see Ava Luna but the other bands on the line-up were MiniBoone, Your Youth and Bermuda Bonnie.

Kickstarter Campaign For Adventures in Plymptoons

In the spirit of the independent music I write about I was compelled to feature this Kickstarter project, because it reeks of DIY gone right. Determination, conviction and a little humor goes a long way and independent filmmaker Alexia Anatosio has all that and more.

Her documentary Adventures in Plymptoons about Oscar nominated animator Bill Plymton is currently in post-production and in need of additional funding. Alexis is hoping to achieve her goals through an inventive Kickstarter campaign that bring fans and donors into the fray. To achieve her goals she is wiling to give it her all, including shaving her beautiful locks of hair and fashioning a Mohawk.

Alexia’s enthusiasm for this project is contagious. She celebrates and is inspired by Bill Plympton’s career as an independent filmmaker and is making this documentary with the same independent spirit. All filmmakers, artists and musicians should take note and be inspired as well.

Alexia’s Kickstarter campaign is absolutely worth a click to view. It features some takes with Bill Plymton and anecdotes by a few of his voice-over team edited with clips of Plympton’s animated world.

Even if you don’t have the funds to help her achieve her goals you can help spread it around through networking.

Coyote Eyes, Dynamic Set @ The Delancey

On Friday night I attended a fundraiser for the band Coyote Eyes at The Delancey. Their goal was to recoup the costs incurred recording their EP after the small label who offered financial backing folded, leaving the band with expenses they hadn’t planned for. On hand to help were the Flying Pace, Marie Stella from Portland Maine and Quiet Loudly who played sets and offered cheap merch while friends baked treats for sale. It was an atmosphere of love support and good music making.

As soon Coyote Eyes hit the stage it was apparent why everyone there was showing the love. The foursome floored me with two guitars, peddle boards, synth, bass, drums and combined vocals.

Coyote Eyes were engaged creating an invigorating sound guided by melodic sonic movements and rev-ed up clean bell like guitar riffs that build and scaffold, blasting with pulsating fast strumming meant to take you somewhere. Leading from the back and divine to witness was Jeremiah McVay whose thunderous drumming skill was always on queue and the force and backbone of the sound.

The dynamic contrasts of two vocalists diversified the sound and what made it more surprising is how they fluctuate between dominating one song or another or sing in unison. Manny Nomikos emotional singing style with bursts of volume, multiple pitch and at times Yoko like channeling while Marta’s Deloreon vocals were smooth intoxicating and perfectly phrased.

What is especially strong is how Deloreon’s voice rises above the amplified sonic rock cycles hanging suspended like a cloud above the surface of the forceful instrumentation. Calling and cooing and taking the listener in.

I am looking forward to the EP and ready to be wowed.

Jive Grave & The Fancy @ Ars Nova

Jive Grave and The Fancy were the line-up for Wednesday as part of Ars Nova 54/10 music marathon series. Two bands with accomplished musicians and visions.

It has been my pleasure to chronicle Geo Wyeth’s music incarnations for the last two years. What a satisfying ride it’s been.

I arrived just as Jive Grave was finishing their first song. Geo Wyeth thanked Ars Nova for their support as their 2009 Composer-in-Residence. The residency gave him the opportunity to explore and compose / Haunts song cycle. With Geo at the helm the band Jive Grave was spawned.

The set explored looping with bells, vocals and guitar notes, solo material, claps, horn arrangements and an intricate beat between two drummers featuring a drum kit and tom tom. The music frames the lyrics with it’s melting pot of sound where repetition is fleeting and snippets of sound are segmented and disjointed. Geo’s lyrics reference legacy, lineage, memory and the city are pieced together in collage of ripped, rough and sometime soft edges.

They played "Black One On the River" with a sound rich with texture, sax accents, vocal harmonics and Afro-centric guitar. The tremelo picking soared at a high pitch rising like a blustering current to an abrupt ending. / Will you wait for me for me / in the water / it’s a mighty / current we are running from./

Geo Wyeth emphasised, “this is a song about where I live, Bedford Stuyvesant. “So Funny It Might Be Death” began with scat vocal blurts, claps and the saxophone played by Tina Richadson and Wyeth’s guitar with punched chords and chiming note flourishes. The celebratory sound was fitting for Wyeth’s lyrical poetic perspective making the neighborhood come alive / The kids all got scowls under their breath like old church ladies /.

Jive Grave’s sound is cerebral and vibrant provoking the listener to pay attention.The release date for 7” Blackone in September features vocalist Becca Kaufman whose voice is a treasure and creates striking contrasts. Listen Here

The Fancy play gorgeous orchestrated pop that is so smooth and yummy it tastes like butta. Composer/songwriter and lead vocal duo Clara Latham and Seth Garrison are classically trained and their compositions reflect a commitment to the accessible and smart. What sets this group apart is not just their choice of instrumentation but how it is applied. Key board and synth, electric guitar, bassoon, viola and gorgeous vocals

They started with “Honey Baby” which had great orchestration with viola scales woven through. “Out Of The City” had luscious harmonies, creamy confection that is sticky kind of a sophisticated Abba mixed with serious instrumentation. Kind of a dichotomy of sound.

The cover song of choice was Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman”. It was a complex interpretation that coordinated a steady bass with the bassoon and viola played in a round. You could visibly see the concentration and efforts Katherine Young and Amy Cimini two incredible soloists.

They brought out their guest drummer Craig Bray for the song “O Willa” that started slow with a singing dialogue and then grew to a fast, furious action and timing.

Their attention to details was apparent as they asked to bring down guitar levels and more sound on the bassoon and vocals. They care about delivery. I was very impressed with this band. They even have a great website that is informative and a joy to explore. They got it together!

Crazy Over Brian Newman @ Duane Park Live Review

Been meaning to go to Duane Park to see the Brian Newman Jazz Trio After Dark at Duane Park for a while. They perform there every Friday night with a rotating cast of beautiful burlesque performers.

Brian Newman's singing voice is impeccable reaching gorgeous high notes while adding his own spin to classic jazz standards. As a trumpeter his trumpet is an extension of his being. Somehow he finds enough air to dig in and blow improvisational bursts between lyrics.

Dressed to please the svelte dapper Newman visually pulls out all the stops as the quintessential master of ceremonies. With his cool demeanor and awesome showmanship, he worked the room like a fast witted vaudevillian comic adding enough spice and a little grit without loosing his classy flair.

The clanking of glasses, endless chatter and lively bar action added to the atmosphere but I would have preferred a quiet room to fully take in the marvelous music.

Earlier this month Brian Newman made his television debut with Lady Gaga on the Today Show. His underground reputation with fellow musicians as someone to collaborate with is now out of the box. A much deserved career boost.

It was sweet to see a few of those new fans last Friday at Duane Park who came to listen.

Langhorne Slim @ Brooklyn Bowl

It has been a joy following and writing about Langhorne Slim for the last four years. The band has always been able to stir a crowd with it’s infectious music and Slim’s charismatic showmanship. So what’s been changing? There is a different feeling in the air. People are finding out about the group from a variety of sources and coming out to see for themselves. The power of exposure. But music in general can’t be supported by a simple download. It is when a fan makes a commitment to see a band live.

One such patron was up front with her camera, ready to hear the song that brought her to the show. She was visibly overwhelmed with the power of the live show and although unfamiliar with most of the set chronicling their discography she will ultimately be a true supporter of the band and it’s output.

At the Brooklyn Bowl the popularity of the group was apparent. Slim did not have to win the crowd over they were already there hanging on every word, dancing and singing along. Even with an adoring crowd the band does not take anything for granted they bring it on more.

All the roadworthy experience has catapulted this group into another category. The momentum is building and for Langhorne Slim stardom is right around the corner and they are ready.

The Woes and The Defibulators @ Ars Nova

The Woes have been on my radar only through word of mouth among the bands I write about like Langhorne Slim, o’death and Sgt Dunbar and the Hobo Banned. I met Osei Essed at Brooklyn Bowl at Langhorne Slim show and realized we’ve crossed paths at other shows. It sometimes takes me a while to dot the I’s. So with that said, I made it a point to go uptown to Ars Nova.

The Woes bring an all one approach to there music combining genres of soul, punk gospel, blues, early folk and jazz with an impressive attention to details. With the exuberance of a funeral marchin jubilee, they played jazzy segments on saxophone, trumpet and french horn with bluesy riffs on guitar and banjo and rev-ed up action on the peddle steel guitar.

All the great musicianship centers around the deep vocals Osei Essed. His soulful straightforwardness blended and angst ridden thickness from down below the diaphragm creates an urgency of quick tight upheavals of rising howls, whoops and groans. The jubilant chorus of shouters from the brass section belt it up between blows added to the lively mix.

What was great for me was to really get a chance to hear their music in a venue that cares about

sound. So I was able to fully appreciate the clarity and tight framework of their live set.

The Defibulators from Brooklyn bring tongue and cheek, Hee Haw antics and references to redneck country, pickups and truck stop a go-go to their blend of rockabilly home grown country rock. The six person group played a lively, theatrical and friendly set with excellent instrumentation and the outstanding voice of Erin Bru their only female member. All in good fun they played with a little help from their comedic puppet Buddy, a “human” version of Triumph the insult comic dog as the master of ceremonies. The Defibulators brought out all the stops including a comedic movie short about tour stash and the cops on the take looking for the shit.

Ars Nova is a small venue that cares. This was my second visit to the small intimate venue but a few of the groups I’ve featured on this site like Langhorne Slim, Geo Wyeth and Max Vernon have played there. Ars Nova provides a hub for emerging talent in music, comedy and theater. Getting the word out about this diamond in the rough should be paramount.

Maryanne Ventrice Band Photography @ Con Artist Gallery

Con Artist Gallery is a collective dedicated to showcasing a rotating line up artists, designed as a one night only event on Wednesdays, down under through the steel grate on 119 Ludlow Street. Brian Sevrin is the creator of the workshop/artists collective where items produced on the premises by the members are sold in the front half of the space and the workshop turned gallery, in the rear. The Con Artist concept is to bypass the gallery system creating opportunities for artists to show their work and make a CONnection within a community.

Last night Con Artist featured the band photography by Maryanne Ventrice entitled “More Guitar In The Monitor”. Maryanne has become a staple in the indie music scene documenting bands in Brooklyn and Manhattan since 2007 in venues like Death by Audio, Union Hall, Cake Shop and Bruar Falls. If there is a show she is there with her heavy bag of tools and work horse ethic.

Her DIY approach to photography and honest no nonsense shooting reflects the love she brings to the genre of band photography. She has the patience it takes to capture moments rather then going for the obvious. I have seen her work many shows where she unobtrusively moves around to document different angles or crowd interactions.

Just as straight forward as Maryanne is as a person her gallery debut was no different. Sheets of photo paper dangled unframed from wires attached to the ceiling pipes around the perimeter of the room. Her non-pretentious work hung like classic compositions displaying the beauty of The National’s lead singer Matt Berninger intertwined with the mic chord, or James Harvey of Drink Up Buttercup hands rising up in the air to soak up the enthusiastic crowd and capturing the intensity of lead singer Patrick Stickles of Titus Andronicus.

Maryanne is a no frills woman, totally is who she is, honest, hard working and approachable. To me she is a “Trooper Photographer” whose efforts contribute to moving the music culture forward.

Drink Up Buttercup; Hot @ Northside Festival

Drink Up Buttercup cools the heat on a hot night at Berry Park in Brooklyn leaving their garbage cans behind and clearing the air for the sound of upgraded instruments and urgent harmonies. DUB clicks on the refresh button playing their familiar songs from their release Born and Thrown on a Hook with a refreshing twist making a live experience never stale and full of surprises.

I like to document the bands visual sets and new additions are optical illusion amps and colorful use of duct tape. The mannequin's mouth was covered with duct tape masking a human expression from an inanimate object. But no one there was expressionless and this blogger as usual could not be contained.

The Cool Sound of Ava Luna "Clips"

I first became aware of Ava Luna while scrolling my daily site visits. If You Make It (Pink Couch Sessions) is one of them. The sound Ava Luna created sitting on the crowded pink couch was different then anything previously uploaded on the site and kind of intoxicating.

So by complete and utter chance I ran into two of the band members on a cold winter night as we waited outside a music loft event to see Vio Mire. I said, "aren't you the band Ava Luna, I loved your video" They were kind of taken aback since the video went up on the site that day.

This video features the song "Clips" creating a sound of roughed up electronic soul combined with out of this world girl harmonies. Two obvious influences are a mix of Dirty Projectors and Jamie Lidell. What could be better?

North Highlands Kick off Sound Bites Music Series

With scenic views and a breezy tempo Sound Bites, Bill Pearis kicked off his curatorial gig booking bands for the South Street Seaport's festival summer season. Every Wednesday in June starting at noon, Pearis will put on his DJ hat for an hour of tunes followed by the scheduled band. It's formal title is Sound Bites Lunchtime Series and it's free!

This Sunday during Memorial Day weekend North Highlands a Brooklyn quintet fronted on keys and lead vocals by Brenda Malvini, graced the stage. They played accessible and contagious music that is bouncy, poppy and dreamy. The folk instruments like the mandolin and violin were delightfully integrated into an orchestral mix of keys, drums and electric guitar. The drumming was especially awesome.

Brenda's voice has a smooth tonality with playful breathy aspects that are immediately endearing. When the band revs up in intensity her voice and mannerisms animate to engage the audience. North Highlands is a tight and spunky band that has lots of heart. I loved them.

The line to buy North Highlands EP "Sugarlips" were longer then I expected. It was nice to see random passersby willing to shell out dough for an unknown band.

Director Features Hop Along, Song "Sally"

Back in September Frances Quinlan of the Hop Along (the band) formally known as Hop Along Queen Ansleis (her solo effort), gave me her beautiful vinyl record Wretches released on Salinas Records. It took me a while to find the turntable my daughter brought me and enjoy the cherished music experience of years past.

So nice to see the awesome song "Sally" make the cut on "Everything's Better In 33 rpm", directed by Chris Boyton.

I will follow the talented Geo Wyeth and any name, project or direction he chooses to create. Going it solo for the past two years as Novice Theory, Geo has currently assembled a line-up of talented musicians to bring his ideas to fuller fruition with Jive Grave. His incredible skill as a solo performer is not lost with collaboration.

Weyth is an accomplished pianist but has taken up guitar with remarkable results. Hitting the strings instead of the keys and combining notes and chords with original results. The night at the Rockwood Music Hall on april 28th the guitar was featured. Bravely he coordinated looping and also brought out the nylon string guitar and harmonica for a folk song dedicated to his father.

The band of sax, flute, bass and two drummers created a dynamic mix of Wyeths original songs with a fusion of Jazz, rock, and folk. It was the unexpected that made the set such a delight to hear.

Earlier this spring Fierman staged and art performance event to Save The Starlite Lounge in Crown Heights the oldest "non discriminating" African-American owned bar in the city from eviction. The performances were kitschy, edgy, theatrical, interactive, diverse and good fun. The Karaoke Queen Lady Jasmin resident drag queen of the Starlite was the master of ceremony, taking the genre of Karaoke to mezmorizing levels.

Langhorne Slim; Stomping @ City Winery live review

Langhorne Slim filled the beautiful City Winery with a soul fiery epic performance. They made the 21,000 square foot space feel intimate, crazy and spontaneous. When it was over I was drenched and satisfied in Langhorne Love.

City Winery is rustic chic and spacious, filled with tables and patrons ready for music, dinner and drinks. I Franky didn't know what to expect. I have seen Langhorne Slim so many times but rarely at a seated venue.

Langhorne managed to excite all the sitters and somehow got everyone to stand, clap and dance. At one point he hopped out deep through the seats leaving the mic and band on stage. Still there was no dead air, the audience just filled right in. He welcomed people up to dance and generally orchestrated a two hour long set.

They selected a broad range of songs and mixed everything up between acoustic, solo and full band crowd pleasers like "Cinderella", "I Love to Dance", "In the Midnight" and "Mary". It was beautifully timed and selected but totally in the moment.

Langhorne naturally gives his fans and any audience his complete and undivided attention and the awesome band Malachi Delorenzo (drums), David Moore (banjo/keyboard) and Jeff Ratner (bass), kept up with his every move and that ain't easy!

Max Vernon and Dan Fishback Share the Spotlight @ Joe's Pub

It was a night of firsts for musicians Max Vernon and Dan Fishback who are about a decade apart sharing the bill for their Joe's Pub debut. They have different music styles but both are clever songsters and have the Charm factor sewn up.

Max Vernon rolled out a more poppy set then usual playing solo on the piano, guitar or keys and featuring the band in groupings or as a whole. It was an assemblage of diverse parts whether acoustic, synth, cool backup vocals or the bow cello percussion it was smart ass planning.

In prime form was Vernon's magnificent vocal talent, smart as hell songwriting and piano chops that ease across the keys. He was so relaxed that he shared stories behind the songs. They were poignant, topical or downright sassy.

When he played his only slow song "Pastels" fans in rafters were cooing and he replied "I guess I got a hit". "Sirens" sounded great with the full band and he strutted his tall frame at the keys with another new one "The Morning After" with a little cool splice in of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance".

Max Vernon is spectacular to look at. His long lean six foot three inch frame is always styled to delight. Eye Candy yes, but what really shines is his sincere and charmingly awkward way. Case in point as he entered and left the stage with a goofy wave. He could have soaked up the adoring attention and milked it with a very long deserved bow.

Talent like his does not come around too often and at twenty one his ability and determination will bring him a successful long lasting career. I'm just happy to be able to witness and document it from the beginning.

Dan Fishback's very high voice is pitch perfect, clear and pristine. He is proudly gay and that is reflected in his songwriting usually performed alone with his acoustic guitar. But for this performance he pulled out all the stops with a very tight accomplished band featuring guitar, piano and drums. In stark contrast to the serious side of the instrumentation was his comedic and witty lyrics. One example was the song "Make Out"/ I'm going to make out with everybody who philosophically disgusts me /.

Not being familiar with his music the first thing that came to mind was John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats reflecting a certain rhythm and ongoing dialogue tied together with great melody.

A delight was the guest appearance by Sammy Tunis of the band The Lisps joining Dan for an acoustic duet. He ended the set with a proud anti-folk chorus contingent who joined him on the stage for the finale.

His cutest remark of the night was when he said, "he didn't have time to write any new material because he was happily in love". His charming sweet demeanor and cool geeky exterior was beyond endearing and a delight.

Sgt Dunbar and the Hobo Banned Muscular Live Sound @ Pete's Candy Store

Sgt Dunbar and the Hobo Banned pulled out all the punches with their muscular sound and street savvy creds at Pete's Candy Store on Saturday night. Clearly their new material had more might and less folk. The heavy brass metal mash, double percussion and a slew of hefty instruments trumped up the acoustic guitar, banjo and violin to make way for an evolving new direction.

Sgt. Dunbar brings the street into the venue making music that is alive, in the moment and vibrant. Busking has raised their stamina and connectedness. They are energized performing for each other. The beneficiaries are the listeners.

This was their eighteenth show and the last stop of their tour to SXSW and back. All eight members orchestrated instrument changes with ease and precision. No easy task to accomplish especially on a small stage. I'm just stating the obvious but this takes practice and planning. They might call themselves Hobos but this outfit are a disciplined crew.

Rockers Delight Festival; Liberate @ Ace of Clubs

A Nor'easter in March couldn't deter the ardent fans from coming to hear Rockers Delight @ the Ace Of Clubs for a queer heavy mostly female line-up to benefit V-Day: A Global Movement to End Violence Against Women.

This night woman musicians ruled regardless of age. The rockers community had open hearts and welcomed the music with an outpouring of love and enthusiasm.

I managed to stay for only three sets out of six. The venue had gigantic speakers and the mix was loud leaving little in the way of subtlety.

Vero's set was the first in the line-up and my reason for being there. I recently reviewed Vero @ The Rockwood and was thoroughly impressed. Tonight the staging gave the band and Vero a chance to loosen up. The band debuted a new song with an urban cowboy vibe and a folk rock twist. The trotting hammered bass notes on guitar while the percussion kicked up dirt leaving the delicate guitar leads settling in the dust cloud. Vero's sultry voice picked up every nuance adding just the right mix of enthusiasm at its peak.

This set showed off Vero's versatility as a songwriter and performer. She is not genre specific and that's what makes her music so intriguing. Her awesome band mates ice the cake with intelligent playing.

Hooray For Goodbye a power pop outfit with kick ass rapper rocker front woman Genny Slag. Her small stature was deceptive because on stage she is power master of energy leading the bands segments of loud thrashing and sonic movements. The bands fluidity are driven by guitarist Sora An and were layered between expansive leads and power chord distortions giving Slag a chance to recover and come on like gang busters. Very engaging band.

Karyn Kuhl billed as old school's finest bad asses. The skilled line-up of players championing the power of confidence to play regardless of age. Karyn Kuhl is an accomplished guitarist with a voice that is a bluesy mix between Janis Joplin and Pati Smith. She was accompanied by saxophone lead guitar, bass and drums playing a loud, feisty set full of conviction. I wrote Karyn's colloquial banter specifically designed for the audience with some eyeliner on a piece of paper that I clearly can't find, but trust me they were good.

As I was leaving I realized how marginalized and over sexualized woman of rock are depicted in the hetero culture. Having lived all my life within the confines of a straight culture left me wondering how different everything could be if I just didn't give a shit what anyone thought. For women buying into culture constraints is an inhibitor of what is possible. I left the Ace of Clubs feeling liberated.

Drink Up Buttercup's Release; Born And Thrown On A Hook worth spreading / review

Drink Up Buttercup's debut full length Born And Thrown On A Hook released on Yep Rock Records has hooks galore and mixed to be heard in full. Between each glorious track are surreal conglomerations for the cerebral explorer. It is an earful of delight around every corner.

They have created a contagious commotion worthy of note splicing the ruckus orchestra and highlighting the bands many strong suites one of which is James Harvey's vocal gifts. Ben Money and Farzad Houshianejad harmonize beyond perfection and Mike Cammarata lays down unpredictable drumming. The sound they create using drums, bass, guitar, keyboard and melodica with a host of bells and shakers can be categorized with the following descriptors; Psyche pop, Crash and Burn Pop, Hardcore Pop, Barbershop Vibrato, Campfire metal, and Psychedelic Mayhem. I can go on.

This release proves their musical inventiveness that includes revisiting beloved genres like the Beatles, Beach Boys to splice and dice and re-mash into a schizophrenic whirlwind. While all the songs create an uplifting levity there is a darker almost tragic subtext. This is just one of the many dichotomies of Drink Up's broad stroke style.

Slower numbers are delightfully beautiful forgoing the loud and chaotic for harmonic delight. "The Lovers Play Dead" gives the tired genre "Barbershop", a vibrato edge going full tilt acoustic with some shakers, kick drum and the bang of a cymbal. "Young Ladies" is Drink Up Buttercup Light, airy, bouncy and sweet with lots of bells, shakers and melodica. And "Pink Sunshine" weighs in on the light side showing off Harvey's Angelic vocals, rippling keys with a contrasting slaphappy beat.

They save the full assault for "Mr. Pie Eyes", "Heavy Hand", "Gods and Gentleman" and end with their most inventive, "Maestro Monsignor". These tracks escalate off the rafters with a delirious juxtaposition of instruments and vocals.

The first song "Seasickness Pills" starts with strange trippy intro and the familiar NBC sound logo hook adding vocals that rise and descend. The Boing of the bass, the clinking clash of cymbals, mashed with horror organ and dramatic opera leads to a frenetic ending.

The disjointed song structure in "Heavy Hand" jumps between fast and slow creating a full mashed up mesh of voices that escalate to uproarious levels, the bass mimicking melody, drunken keyboard, interim yelp hooks and drums that pound at abandon. This is one muscular song.

Three "dance Tracks" should appeal to the geek in everyone are "Doggy Head" with its throbbing tribal beat trot combining awesome harmonies and rhythmic bass scales. "Even Think" has a pop beat catchiness that layers keyboard hooks between vocal harmonies. I dare you not to move to "Sosy and Dosey" although awkwardly, to the broken keyboard and one / two polka like beat with so many time changes it will make your head spin.

The collection concludes with the experimental rock opera "Maestro Monsignor" that blends strange musical reverences sequenced together like a broken kaleidoscope into four distinct parts. Beginning with sing story style, macho vaudevillian vocals, loonie bin choral howls and ending with surreal multi-layered chants of frenzied exaltation.

Born On a Hook Debut is worth the anticipation of waiting and proves that Drink Up Buttercup's stubborn conviction to work it all out on the road before laying down the recording worked out. They nailed it.

Explosive and Strong like duct tape!

Drink Up Buttercup's record release show set at Piano's was strong, flexible and explosive. The affect is long lasting much like pink duct tape used last night to coordinate their makeshift set up. Duct tape on the run.

Drink Up Buttercup has muscle and flexed it with experimentation creating an urgency of sound. The guitars were amped up, the bass notes held down to contort and extend beyond recognition, and James Harvey proved that his thoracic diaphragm can scream, do opera and harmonize simultaneously.

The rain didn't put a damper on the enthusiastic crowd who waited till 12:00 for the lively set.

How they will sustain this kind of energy for all eleven dates at SXSW will be a testiment to a band that could. I'm sure they will proove their might. I wish them well!

The Accident That Led Me To The World @ Rockwood Music Hall

The Accident That Led Me to the World are an all-acoustic chamber modern folk band that stay true to their music, unwavering in their formal presentation at the Rockwood Music Hall. What a treat. It had the feel of music that is planned, rehearsed and arranged to perfection. As flawless as each note sounded the emotional quality of the singing created a dynamic urgency.

Their intimate set quietly expressed the subtle tonality of the nylon guitar, clarinet, banjo and stand-up bass. The power punch came in the way of harmonies to die for!

Mark Mandeville guitar /banjo and lead vocalist has such a distinct voice. It's raspy without sounding hoarse and exudes conviction. He was joined by Raianne Richards guitar/clarinet who added mirroring vocal harmonies and Zack Ciras with the most perfectly edited bass accompaniment. This wasn't your finger picking fare but more like a dialogue of chords and notes between the guitars.

I've been following their music from a far and always looking out for NY dates. The band is from Webster/Dudley, MA and plays more of the New England circuit of festivals, venues and house shows, where the booking scene is curated and more friendly. Unfortunately, in NY and in most venues it is in and out and onto the next group.

I was so pleased get my hands on their 2008 release Island Gospel and was blown away by the beauty and quality of the recording. No shakers, or bells and whistles just straight- forward instrumentation, great story telling and awesome harmonies.

The Accident That Led Me To The World is a solid outfit whose mere presence defies the fickle taste and fast paced music buzz agenda of the latest thing and rise to a higher level.

With that said I just feel it is unfortunate that a band of this caliber has not garnered more recognition that should change!

Peasant: Shady Retreat

With the release of Shady Retreat Peasant AKA Damien DeRose has reclaimed his intentions. Shady Retreat establishes a winning combination of the quirky/folk I fell in love with on his self released Fear Not, Distant Lover and the folk/pop of On The Ground released by Paper Garden Records

The quirky treatments throughout the recording give DeRose's distinct melodies the folky charm of a favorite old shirt or the warmth of a familiar feeling. His voice captures a raw sincerity always on the verge of breaking, gathering teardrops and sentiments of love, loss, hope and promise.

Don't be deceived by short or seemingly simple aspects of DeRose's writing, he is a thoughtful writer and editor. It is what he leaves out that is important. His lyrics fluctuate from the global to the personal where he pushes and pulls those competing themes. Especially in "Hard Times" where the guitar and vocals echo through old speakers creating a poignant timeless feel. Kind of like a lullaby for a young generation loosing hope through difficult times../ Hard times / aren't good times / but we'll still try to see them through /.

This collection starts with "Thinking" combining the organ, shakers and harmonies to contemplate our place in the world.. / We just can't go on without thinking /. I don't any lyric could be so perfectly clear and relevant.

"The Distance" continues in a reflective tone one that is more personal rather than worldly with a slow strum that ponders the future while listening to the distance of the past. / where have you been my lover / where have you gone my friends / fading to the distance of each other.

Three cool songs in a row propel the unique offbeat percussion. "Well Alright" has an awesome sloppy drum beat with simple piano,"Pry" adds shakers and pot beat to a sad waltz and "Prescriptions" has great clopping horse trot with soft harmonies.

Capturing mood is another aspect of his song structure. The use of metaphor in "Into The Woods" creates the dreamlike setting with female harmonies. In the song "Tough" the mood is love with a capital L. With its soft plucking guitar it is drenched in the morning sunlight of appreciation. / Can't you be the only one for me / your like the rising sun /.

Shady Retreat ends with "Slow Down" using twangy guitar chimes while ending appropriately singing / I wouldn't change a thing /. And he didn't!

Peasant's instincts were right to record Shady Retreat alone in a 200 year old farmhouse where he crafted a full blast of authenticity.

Sgt Dunbar and the Hobo Banned have achieved their goal to raise the funds necessary to fix their broken down tour van and make it to their destination SXSW. Mission Accomplished with the help of the Kickstarter a funding platform for artists, designers, filmmakers, musicians, journalists, inventors and explorers.

The tag line on their Myspace page has always read "Give More then You Take Away." So in keeping with that sentiment they came up with awesome give back to anyone who donated. The rewards were sweet ranging from a simple Sgt Dunbar mug, a donors name on their van, a special house show or band supervised date with Donna Baird.

The fans gave back their heartfelt love to a very giving and talented band.

Go Dunbar! Kill it at SXSW and enjoy the tour down and back. Like last year, I look forward to seeing the rad videos of your awesome Busking and official dates as well!

Vio Mire brings warmth and astounding beauty to the dusty Pink Couch at If You Make It headquarters. I am proud that I was responsible for helping to make this happen. Dave Gawacke Owner and Creator of IYMI fit both Vio Mire and Liz Isenberg into his recording schedule. Their tour had one open slot and Dave came through.

To affect someone very strongly in a way that is difficult to forget Something about the haunting beauty Vio Mire's Music really got under my skin. Watch and I think you would agree!

Lofty Music Performances In SOHO live review

Yo Yo a private loft performance space in SOHO hosted a fabulous night of music and performance art, welcoming Omnivore, Liz Isenberg, Vio Mire based in Providence and Dan Fishkin from Pennsylvania / NYC. It was a night to be receptive to the unknown and the folksy delight of Liz Isenberg and the disarmingly beautiful music of Vio Mire.

When art and music coexist the music becomes the vehicle for the art. Both Daniel Fishkin and Omnivore utilized that concept in very different and provocative ways.

Dan Fishkin AKA Dandelion Fiction set up was complicated for a solo set. Below his feet was a full line up of connected circuitry and an assortment of instruments. The daxophone, a wooden instrument that Daniel made was wedged between his legs, created a string clank sound that he looped. His punked turrets train of thought vocals projected a veracity of nervous energy.

He started a song on a banjo with just a few notes and a fellow band member, got up and joined him in the middle of the space in an acoustic serenade singing through the skin of the banjo. Another song something to the effect "I Was Playing with Myself" started out alone and scripted musicians rose from the audience with a trombone, violin and guitar to sing the chorus.

His surprising antics are reminiscent of the late Andy Kaufman. He challenged the audience’s perceptions by being both aggressive and tender. The tension between the hysterical and the uncomfortable made the performance something to savior.

Omnivore AKA Glenna Kay Van Nostrand a tall striking blond, set up a couple of princess phones wired on a round table. Casually sitting at her little table she picked up her phones to talk/sing and loop. She started of often with a few choice words and cascaded the conversation into the loop.

The old fashioned phone unlike the cell phone is a private experience. So watching her created a tension that was both seductive and voyeuristic. Her sexy vocals lopped and filled the space creating a feeling of overhearing private thoughts in a public setting.

Liz Isenberg has a fan base and that is obvious when she sings they spontaneously sing along with her choruses. She is a delightful mix of folk with edge. Her gorgeous voice warbles softly and comes on strong for emphasis and her guitar playing mirrors that effect as well. It is her quirky lyrics and personality that shine through her music creating an appeal factor that can’t be denied. I loved her from the first note.

Something to take note of is her co-writing and added vocals on Deer Ticks latest release Flag Day "Friday the 13th" was picked by Rolling Stone as his best track and featured their video duet on Rolling Stone's Smoking Section.

Brendon played the classical guitar while his touring mates on keys and bass did back up vocals. The guitar added warmth to the intimate acoustic set.

Unfortunately only the few and in the know have heard of him. Music that is so deeply beautiful is rare, I only wish I found him sooner

Drink Up Buttercup Does it Right when it comes to the promotion of their new album Born and Thrown On A Hook, One Awesome Click at a Time

Especially interesting is their concept of releasing each song with one homemade video at a time. Filming at various locations with different set ups we get to hear each song live, raw, acoustic or electric. Using a grid of picture links on Muxtape site each shot is coordinated with a new video upload every Tuesday until the grand March 23rd release date.

Each video is creative and friendly much like the band. Without an outright commercial assault the Drink Up Buttercup Aesthetic is true to form.

The Charismatic VERO @ Rockwood Music Hall

Vero!! Pronunciation: Emphasize a long roll of the R and add Spanish flair. Formally Mahogany and now Vero! Only one name is fitting for this charismatic performer.

Vero AKA Veronica Sanchez is a singer songwriter whose sultry voice is downright full of feeling. Vero switching between guitar and ukulele was backed by an acoustic band of folk/rock supports; Josh Miller’s gorgeous guitar leads, the attentive feisty drummer T and Wilson Novitzki on bass.

Vero’s songwriting is like an urban Loretta Lynn with a lesbian twist, some Spanish spice and street rap. She delivers her heartfelt stories with the passion of authenticity.

Especially effective was a reassuring song to her father about her lifestyle. When she sang the song “Kissed” it was so sexy I was ready to switch sides. We were treated to an Argentinean folk cover that was emotional and powerful. Fuck English, she made her roots shine! I felt every nuance.

The set ended with an awesome spontaneous rap spar with an audience member. Plant maybe? But when she handed over the mic they went at it. It was crazy fun and a perfect ending.

A Vero set is a bit of everything. What emerges is a confident performer with striking physical presence, awesome tats, whose glowing personality is the vehicle into her music.

Chosen word of the night was obsessed! Her fans and friends are obsessed and I can see why. Thanks to friends David Achelis and wife Andrea for the great hang and awesome night cap @ Milano's. Special shout out to Carlos and pal!! Nice to meet you!

Novice Theory; Inspiring Charge @ Rockwood Music Hall

Seeing Novice Theory at the Rockwood Music Hall with a full band of supportive and talented musicians was an inspired way to close out a year and get ready for a new one. Whether solo or with a band, Novice Theory's music performance has electrical conductivity directly aimed to charge an audience. Mission accomplished!

Geo Wyeth has the ability to inspire listeners and fellow musicians. This was the first chance I got to see him with a assembled cast of exceptional musicians. What was so obvious was the genuine love they have for Geo and how much they enjoy bringing his music vision to fruition.

The fuller bodied sound of Jazz offshoots added to Geo's expanded lyrical palette beyond the autobiographical to include a tapestry of uniquely urban wit and insight. Last night they played work from the recently released EP Ordinary Death along with one freshly presented newer song. I like chances like that!

The sandwiched crowd at the small venue begged for an encore and we were treated to an older song played solo on accordion that was performed back in 08 on the Jools Holland Show in the UK.

It is wonderful to post this and to include The Music Slut's take as well. It is not often that I can share an experience with someone who enjoys music as music as I do and makes me feel comfortable in such close quarters.

What an awesome journey it has been doing this site. Although I wish with all my heart that this could be my full time gig. I am still excited about the small part I am playing in moving the music culture forward one reader at a time. Sometimes it is the smaller blogs that can bring exposure to unknown music. Many of the people I've written about on these pages have moved beyond novelty and have gained more extensive exposure. That makes me happy. Obsession Collection Music welcomes another year doing this blog.

Obsession Collection Music played a small part in coordintating an awesome holiday party back in September. This was a family affair with all attendees invited by my husband, two great adult children and me (OCM). The art and music crowd shared lots of love into the wee hours at Tre Merli.

I end the year once again saying how much I enjoy writing this blog and have been fortunate to have met wonderful people that have enriched my life and others.

The Eskalators

Showpaper still remains true to its original inception producing a bi-monthly all-age music listing fold-out featuring a visual artist on every cover issue. When a concept is fluid it's evolution has little boundaries. Showpaper is branching out to include art and music benefits that support its printing, guerrilla style music happenings and participation in art fairs. Passion can be infectious and Showpaper is worth spreading.

The NY Art Book Fair housed at PS1 in early October, Showpaper displayed an array of colorful issues on a small ledge below Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool art installation. Part of the Showpaper charm is the dedicated rotation of volunteers manning the unofficial site. I spoke with a young woman who was doing a double shift and enthusiastically telling anyone who was interested about the Showpaper mission.

Recently Showpaper shared a booth with VendorBar an exhibitor at The 2009 Editions|Artists' Book Fair showing videos by Flipswitch, Cassettes by Party Labs, and showpaper editions. Greeting the curious was J oe Ahearn, Showpaper's volunteer impresario. He is always finding new ways to bring the Showpaper mission to different audiences. VendorBar organized by Kirby Gookin and Robin Kahn, had awesome conceptual art editions including Yoko Ono's Add Color: Imagine Peace -Stenciling Action, Sal Randolf Free money in book form and printed editions and chewed drawing editions by Larry Miller.

Kirby Gookin and Robin Kahn are both working artists and VendorBar is their latest curatorial endeavour whose mission is to open up direct lines of communication between artists and the public in order to make ideas and artwork more accessible.. They represent an older generation who have an authentic love of art and an enthusiastic vision to inform. This is rare in adult form and even in the art world. Choosing to share a space with Showpaper proves that the spirit of art can cross generations and go beyond just the selling of product.

Michael Petruzzo whose music taste I trust gave me a list of must see music emphasising The Eskalators. Showpaper arranged for the eighteen piece to play a set to end the Editions Fair three day run.

The group assembled in the upstairs entrance with guitar, toy instruments, violin, array of brass and a mini megaphone. Their spirited music full of sing alongs, great lyrics, rag tag fun were in contrast to the traditional and formal aspects of any art event but what a welcome juxtaposition.

Paper Garden Records @ 3rd Ward Review

Multiverse Playground event was presented by Paper Garden Records @ 3rd Ward in Brooklyn, a member-based design center. Sponsors included: 3^rd Ward, Uncensored Interview, Art Battles, Lomography, 1776, The BLDG, Project Fathom.

Paper Garden Records current roster Peasant, Emanuel and the Fear and Darla Farmer represent a perfect diverse live line-up. I endured Art Battles and Comedy Central's Kurt Metzger before the bands started. It was an "Experience" for me but both were enthusiastically received by the crowd.

Peasant
Peasant's slot was to follow the comic, a difficult feat at best for a guy with a guitar. Fortunately for all who slowly reentered the backspace and made a commitment to stay, soon realized Peasant (Damien DeRose) is not standard singer songwriter fare. His is a voice to follow. He played some new songs from Shady Retreat to be released in 2010 and one never performed live. We were treated to two older songs from On the Ground. "Your Good" was fabulous without the drums and Damien said he usually plays "Manners" when an audience is polite. "Hard Times" was appropriate and gave me pause to think about Peasant's ability to weave topical content without being preachy. Peasant is a quiet but reflective voice of his generation. And his voice penetrates in a subtle but lasting way.

Emanuel and the Fear

Emanuel and the Fear are a great live experience with multi-layers of sophisticated composition and an accomplished orchestra. Emanuel Ayvason on keys, guitar and vocals lead the pit with dynamic zeal and musical prowess. He is a music force with a vision and is willing to fuck with it in a good way. Adding drummer Jeff Gretz's metal magic adds an aggressive contrast to the mix. The sound leaves the listener on edge and shakes things up with untimely structures, raw and in the moment vocals without ever loosing the sensuous full embodied sound. Aggressive Orchestral Pop!

Darla Farmer

Darla Farmer makes me smile. They are an ambitious six piece outfit who ploughed through a lively diverse set. Take guitar, bass and drums mix in some horns and keys and grind it out. Their geeky awesomeness is very appealing blurring art rock, noise, metal, Orleans style jazz, screamo with the quirkiest nasal vocals of lead singer Bryce Leonard. We were treated to what seemed like an impromptu Devo style Hip Hop with the best awkward dance moves. It was a rip! Darla Farmer's original sound might be a result of geographical southern roots. Whatever the inspiration, I'm looking forward to more.

At about 1:00 AM more folks invaded to catch Boy Crisis and Das Racist and for the young the night was just starting. I left at 1:30.

Flickr Set is not up to par but I found the staging area too long with little depth making it difficult for band interaction.

Langhorne Slim Bell House live review

Langhorne Slim worked up the formally hometown crowd @ Bell House in Brooklyn. They hung on every word, yelp, utterance and soulful vocal. The songs from Be Set Free sounded so fresh. The new band lineup spiced up songs with additional keyboard, banjo and saxophone. They set the house on fire with “Cinderella” and “For a Little While” and brushed us with a warm breeze with slower songs.

The ballads were amazing and it was so nice when Slim was alone on stage and the audience was with him all the way. This is not an intimate venue so it was striking that he was able to have a conversation between songs.

Slim expressed gratefulness to the audience who gave it right back in spades. It is not too often to see love and music working their magic. Langhorne Slim has a relationship with his audience and it’s a good one.

Langhore Slim's Be Set Free has broken the glass ceiling reaching beyond the novelty beloved by fans, to a wider audience. This is one side of Langhorne Slim. It is the studio side. Langhorne Slim is an incredibly raw live band. Be Set Free produced by Chris Funk (The Decemberists) changes it up adding variety with new instrumental treatments. I would call it Langhorne Slim smooth but not lite.

Slim's songwriting and vocals is so versatile that they cross a variety of genres. Be Set Free does just that combining soul, folk and symphonic rock with heart stopping vocals that reach for the rafters. The slew of instruments piano, organ, brass, strings of all sorts are played by a cast of talented contributors.

The songs are simple and basic like a conversation spiced with little truisms. It is Slim's vocal delivery that adds emphasis broadening interpretation. There are many great catchy melodies, raucous Honky Tonk as well as strong heart tugging ballads.

Starting with the upbeat opener “Back to the Wild” with its smooth strumming, flurry of strings and steady shuffle percussion. Followed by “Say Yes” an optimistic take on love and possibilities.

“Be Set Free” is a ballad of significance with jewel like slide guitar and expressive piano. The soft shaker is the heartbeat for “I Love You But Goodbye”, blending gorgeous cascading piano with Slim’s fervent vocals.

Starting as a mild tempo and escalating to a full soulful throttle of impassioned intonation “For a Little While” blends contrast of timing. It peaks when Malachi DeLorenzo's slow shuffle drumming evolves into a hardcore exuberance mixed with the exhilarating mayhem of mashed up ingredients. “Cinderella” flirts with the listener, offering a soulful wink with help of Honky Tonk swing and an enthusiastic boy chorus.

The sumptuous "Leaving My Love" uses symphonic swells interspersed with lovely vocal dialogue between Slim and Erica Wennerstrom (Heartless Bastards) The chorus of / I can't believe it / I'm leaving my love / intensifies like romantic longings.

In the tradition of country confessionals "So Glad I'm Coming Home" offers sincerity about going home in a sobered state and hoping to be welcomed back.

The album closes with "Boots Boy" an upbeat love affirmation, / I don't want just anybody / I want you / nobody but you /.

Be Set Free is sweet and sultry and naturally uplifts the spirit, A high worth getting.

Little Teeth Make Folk an Art Form

This is a shout out to the band Little Teeth from San Francisco. They have embarked on a huge ambitious tour through the US and are planning a European tour as well. Their debut album Child Bearing Man was released September of 08 on Absolutely Kosher Records.

I was going to see them again at Death by Audio tomorrow but they cancelled due to illness.
I saw them for the first time at CMJ at Zebulon. I unfortunately created a poorly titled post CMJ Day Three, so I'm hoping for a little more exposure via search with this re-post of the review and Video entry.

Feel Better Little Teeth

To say I was delighted to see Little Teeth is an understatement. The twosome of Sofia Bell and Dannie Murrie recently added Sean Real to their inner circle. Their very original music is Folk as an art form played with a conviction of sensibility and spirit. Their all out abandon of song structure focused on experimentation, strange but beguiling harmonies and escalating emphasis of vocals, drumming, cello or banjo.

I was outside socializing when the band set up and was flabbergasted when I moved to the front to find the most intricate found object drum set dejour including a small xylophone. Dani Murrie strapped on an assortment of shells and bells from ankle to knee.

During the set they brought out some additional homemade contraptions. The traditional instruments were plucked and bowed with attitude adding to the disjointed samplings of sound that fried my brain from overdrive of the unexpected. The drummer Sean Real has a passion for playing. A joy to watch.

the music sounds like a much looser Coco Rosie or The Roaches scrabbled. They bring it on with guts, punk and moxie. Halfway through their fifty state tour they stated, “We showered tonight”. Everyone cheered.

Hop Along Halloween

Just had to post this fabulous picture of Hop Along Playing at the Zombie Party Festival in Philly. Hop Along used to be a solo formally known as Hop Along Queen Ansleis and is now with a full band.

Many people in the DIY punk community embraced her music and often put her in their line-up. Well this picture gives me reason to believe Hop Along is achieving their goals. Wow wish I was there.

Halloween Parade, Greenwich Village

I started taking pictures at the band holding station. Later settling in behind a barricade with the NYPD, sharing the space with older photographers donning fancy cameras and trench coats. Other new school guerilla photographers were on the street and a part of the action!

It might have been raining but that didn't damper the spirit! I walked twenty blocks home and the only people I felt sorry for were the dry drivers stuck bumper to bumper on Canal Street. Below are my best shots. Flickr Set

Emanuel and the Fear @ The Delancy rooftop, Afternoon Scores

Emanuel Ayvas’ brought an ensemble of four and delivered lush scores with tabulators and music stands in place. His poetic writing and emotionally delivered vocals accompanied by violin, cello and guitar created a toned down but perfect acoustic orchestral pop and afternoon score for a roof garden space.Their set was a smaller representation of a group that performs with eleven.

Listening to Emanuel and the Fear recordings exemplifies the lush ambitious arrangements full of complexities and swelling of orchestral passages with smart lyrically emotionally delivered vocals.

Bryan Vaughan founder of their label Paper Garden Records has a passion for music he loves and believes in so I was remiss in not following through and hearing them sooner.

Drink Up Buttercup @ The Delancey rooftop, Acoustic Muscle

Drink Up Buttercup is a very different band in the early afternoon. But this is not Drink Up Buttercup Lite, anything but. Although they abandoned their drums, amps, garbage cans and kinesthetic body contortions they highlighted the muscle of their vocal muscle. They stretched their harmonic layering of show stopping standards adding detailed appendages. Showing off their incredible versatility and giving the tired genre "Barbershop" a vibrato edge.

Cale Parks 2 The Delaney Warmth to Techno

Cale Parks brings warmth to Techno, blending cascading dance beats, looping of original music with synth and drum machine. Live Cale Parks drumsticks twirl through the air and hit his mark. The baton twirler, soft crooner, and synth composer does it with precision and finesse. Adding two new players on guitar, bass and keys to his live line-up. Performing, as a one-man band is hard he said as he introduced his new band mates saying “how nice it was not do this alone”. The packed dank basement at the Delancey was the perfect setting to be transformed to another place. Cale Parks and Company took me there.

Sgt. Dunbar and the Hobo Banned @ Zebulon, Word of Choice Amazing

Sgt. Dunbar and The Hobo Banned packed the house and the stage with eight musicians and every imaginable brass and string instrument. I love the Hobos and have seen them several times. Their instruments were in full force featuring many songs off their new EP. They played the title track "A March Through Charles Mingus' Garbage" that featured a vibrant mix of Folk and Jazz a direction they are forging ahead with. The two new songs they debuted forecast a vital and original direction.

The musicianship is something to behold they have become a much tighter entity without loosing their energy and heart displaying the joy of playing together. What is also fascinating is the seamless exchange of instruments throught the set. Whether blowing, singing or strumming everything works. This is a democratic collective where various members share the lead vocal helm adding diversity to the mix.

Sgt. Dunbar and The Hobo Banned were full of bite. All the instruments and vocals united and filled the space with joy and substance. When the set was over I walked through the crowd and the word or choice was amazing.

Pink Noise @ Zebulon Invigorating Smart Noise

Pink Noise makes lots of noise from metal shredding guitar and bass, pounding drums but could not drown out the heafty and soulful vocals of Sharon Sulami This was a set of pure intensity with incredible exchanges between instruments. Noise of exhilaration and contrast played with the force of unpredictability. Invigorating smart noise.

Blood Warrior @ Piano’s, Edgy Twist to Folk

Blood Warrior's brand of Folk is weighty with a thump stomping percussion, great choral harmonies and the vocal awesomeness of Greg Jamie. The music can sooth like a lullaby but don’t get too comfortable because these gentle warrior’s can bring up the volume. Their voices swell; electric guitar leads and acoustic strumming intertwine with shakers and emphasized bass drum, giving traditional Folk an edgy twist.

Max Vernon @ Kenny's Castaways, Master of Design

Making a fashion statement at CMJ is an anomaly, but Max Vernon's intention is to please both visually and sonically. He walked onto the stage wearing asymmetrical googly eye ensemble of his own design.

He started the set by saying "please excuse my unnecessary banter, I have to fill this forty minute set" and fill he did. Max Vernon's verbal acuity does wonders for in between songs but that gift translates well to songwriting.

Standing confidently at 6’4 behind his keyboard and almost strutting he played complex pop / jazz arrangements. His vocals were daring going from low to falsetto adding unexpected touches to his recorded material. What I found the most fascinating was his ability to seamlessly create the backup vocals as well. In between he played three songs on the guitar.

A highlight was "Around Your Finger" with friend Emily to sing the chorus / I hate to tell you / that I had more fun / When you were hooked on drugs /. "Psycho Bitch" a new one is a song in the same vain. His second new offering had a haunting juxtaposition between and irregular chord repetition and a beautiful vocal. He ended with a Liz Phair cover "Canary".

Max Vernon CMJ Debut Tomorrow

Max Vernon reached out to me about a year ago and I've been hooked ever since. He will be performing tomorrow at Kenny's Castaway, his first CMJ debut.

Max Vernon has a vocal instrument that is deep and resonating, its clear tonality has reach and depth of maturity. With a signature voice he delivers piano driven melodies with a broad lyrical palette of intelligence. At twenty years old he composes music that can move in many ways like the Woody Guthrie of Pop to make a bold comparison. OCM 2/ 09 Here

Issue Project Courtyard Great Lineup to End Summer

The Issue Project courtyard on a beautiful afternoon was a perfect site to hear a selection of music by three different musicians. Greg Jamie's pure unadorned set was sandwiched in-between two experimental improvisational sets by Sacred Harp from Virginia and Honne Wells with Juan Comas.

Sacred Harp’s compositional arrangements with instruments, amplification and accoutrements created a trance not for sleeping or contemplating but a welcome space from ear to head.

The instrumental set featured finger picking on a classical guitar, bowing of an electric and anything but typical on a sitar. Utilizing a looping percussion of scrubbed strings was an effective background for guitar instrumental.

Greg Jamie solo set consisted of songs from his newly formed outfit Blood Warriors and one song off a 7” a collaboration with Honne Wells. Going solo is a rare occasion for a man that fronts two bands. So his apparent shyness was charming to watch. Playing guitar, hand held harpsichord and hearing his straightforward vocals were delightful.

The sun was setting as Honne Wells and Juan Comas were on stage and the quietness of the night took hold guiding the sound to resonate off the concrete and bricks. Starting with a five-minute compositional movement that struck time like broken clock tower. Guitar string pings applied in various measures broke up the composition and were contrasted by Honne Wells grunting low vocals.

This spectacular collaboration is something to witness. The guitar, slide guitar, banjo, mouth harp, stomping and vocals melded together to create unique sounds that are unfamiliar and offsetting. Familiarity is not their forte but to create dramatic and mesmerizing tension is.

Langhorne Slim / Crackerfarm Films it Best

Can't wait for Be Set Free by Langhorne Slim due out September 29th on Kemado Records! Here's a great clip by Crackerfarm with a brief interview, some crazy live footage and a sweet acoustic rendition of the song "So Glad That I'm Coming Home". For personal reasons I especially love the handsome young man with the big white specs loving the live show.

Brief Excursion To After The Jump Fest

When I say brief it was but I was happy to catch Get Haunted and I’m Turning Into and the tail end of The Octagon.

Get Haunted is a little bit of Buddy Holly, Rockabilly, speed strum bottleneck and a pounding drum kit. Their shoes were waxed, a tuxedo shirt, some sharp glasses that set the stage for some fancy footwork and great showmanship. So refreshing to not hear we’re from Brooklyn. Although the group hasn’t had many shows it is obvious that they are not new to music or performing. The banjo and drum were the details but the soaring outcomes of Kevin on the slide guitar shredded the joint. The drummer Sarah kept a rudimentary beat, finesse did not apply but enthusiasm, smiles and downright pounding did! Lead singer and banjo strummer Joey Macrino had awesome dance moves and an outstanding command of the stage both vocally and personally.

Although all the songs were full of life there was one outstanding exception that they dedicated to Blood Warrior. The song had levels of intrigue and several time changes that built to a frenetic beat. This made the New York debut for this three piece from New London Connecticut one to remember for them and for me.

I'm Turning Into is a multi-instrumentalist threesome of rotating players who are adept at playing as well as singing. Fast paced punky rock mixed with experimental vocal loop effects and fast rhythmic drumming. They played the ultimate upbeat song “Would It Matter”. Other songs showed off how well they all can play whether it was a long and dynamic jam excursion “Nonlocal” or unusual vocal arrangements with perfectly intact harmonies interspersed with yodel like howling and human beat box. There are some performance quirks to work out due instrument changes but they have a lot to offer.

Edd Chittenden, Jhon Grewell, Steve Tarkington guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Check out this out on myspace you wont be disappointed.

Got to get me some balls and learn the subway system and try to brave the night. Now that I live part time in the city I thought this would be easier but it presents other difficulties. Anyway besides seeing some music I wanted to show my support to the Bloggers from After The Jump Fest who worked so hard to put this event together. Although some of the groups on the fest roster have garnered some press it usually just starts with one curated blog post, download, live review or pictures.

Although I would have loved to stay later to especially see Blood Warrior. I got to hang talk and take some pictures Greg Jamie and Kristen Kellas-Jamie two members of BW a few hours before their 10:00 o’clock set. I have seen Greg Jamie with o’death and was very lucky to catch him for Tonic's official last night doing a special guest appearance with Honne Wells.

Blood Warrior finished up their first small tour making After the Jump Fest their last stop. Featuring the great vocal styling of Greg Jamie with spirited chorus, some shakers and drunken drum beats sounds like a patchwork folk collage.

Max Vernon New Video Entry

To say I'm obsessed with Max Vernon is an understatement. I'm always searching and waiting for new songs and they have been coming at record pace for free download @ The Sixtyone. But it has been long nine month wait for a new home video entry until now. It is a cover song completed for the celebration of Morrisey's fiftieth birthday and part of a compilation released by The Music Slut called TMS Hearts Moz.
